LAGOS GUBER POLL: STOP HEATING THE POLITY, ARTISANS, TECHNICIANS TELL LP CANDIDATE, RHODES-VIVOUR ~Ajasa-Info

•Congratulate Sanwo-Olu, vow to defend Governor’s mandate

•Demand autonomous agency

Lagos State artisans and technicians have warned the Labour Party governorship candidate in last Saturday’s election, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, to desist from destructive and inciting comments that may cause the breakdown of laws and order in the State, saying Lagos cannot afford a repeat of EndSARS saga.

The artisans and technicians advised Rhodes-Vivour to channel his grievances over the gubernatorial poll through the appropriate channel, which is the court of law, rather than inciting people with ‘infamous outbursts and calls for terror.’

Speaking at a press conference in Ikeja on Wednesday, the artisans and technicians through the National Coordinator of Association of Nigeria Artisans and Technicians (ASNAT), Adeshina Akinyemi, who addressed journalists, congratulated Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his victory during the March 18 gubernatorial poll and vowed to defend the Governor’s mandate.

They appealed to Governor Sanwo-Olu to establish an autonomous governmental agency or parastatal that will serve as an overseer agency for the operational activities of all Lagos artisans and technicians, pleading that one of them, a professional artisan or technician should be allowed to head or manage the agency or parastatal when created.

He said: “The Governor’s re-election serves as a re-affirmation of confidence and faith reposed in him by majority of Lagosians. Through his character of competence, capacity, and sagacity, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated his vast knowledge of Lagos and Lagosian needs.

“We believe that Governor Sanwo-Olu will use the opportunity provided by his re-election to leverage on his first term achievements and success to provide more beautiful milestones in infrastructural developments in all sectors of governance through his THEMES agenda.”

The artisans and technicians who vowed to defend the mandate given to Governor Sanwo-Olu by Lagosians called on all the traditional fathers, especially Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, and all Eko elders to call Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour to order and warn him to desist from his destructive and inciting comments.

“We must be cautious and vigilant as our attention is drawn to the inflammatory statements and ranting of the Labour Party’s candidate in the last Lagos State gubernatorial election, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, who has been calling on his supporters to unleash terror on Lagos by embarking on a violent and aggressive protest just because he lost an election in a clean and clear contest.

“At this point, we call on the Police, the DSS, and all other relevant security agencies in Lagos State to be alert and call Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour for questioning over his recent outburst. This is exactly how the EndSARS issue started without paying any important attention to it until it escalated and ravaged the whole country like a colossus.

“We fear that, if the urgent step is not taken to caution Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the aftermath of his action might also escalate like the EndSARS and the worst hit will be the artisans and technicians who depend on daily income to feed themselves and their families.

“We all remember how that inglorious pandemonium called EndSARS ravaged the entire country for almost two weeks and made it impossible for artisans and technicians to work and earned income, to that event, we lost many of our members to cold hands of death while some went into depression which cost them mental illness while some contracted stroke and have not recovered till date. So, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour should be made to retract his infamous outburst and call for terror,” they said.

Speaking on the need for an autonomous government agency or parastatal for Lagos artisans and technicians, Akinyemi said its establishment will bring about rapid development and progress to their sector and will take them out from being a liability to the government to being a great asset and major contributory body to the Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) of Lagos State.

•Kick against plunging Lagos into political, and security crisis

Election Observers on the platform of the National Observer Group (NOG) have adjudged the just concluded Governorship and State Assembly elections in Lagos State as a credible, transparent, free, fair, and gender-friendly election.

The group said the outcome of last Saturday’s gubernatorial poll, won by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the victories of House of Assembly candidates at constituency levels should be “happily accepted by all political parties and candidates as a true reflection of the people’s mandate.”

National Observer Group, a coalition of civil society groups that monitored the last elections in Lagos State, spoke on Monday during a press conference addressed by the group’s Coordinator and National Coordinator, Grassroot Mobiliser for Better Nigeria Initiative, Hon. Safiya Ibrahim Ogoh; Founder of Ayisat Gbajabiamila Foundation, representing Centre for Childcare and Youth Development, Hajia Ayisat Gbajabiamila and Leader of Global Policy Advocacy and Leadership Initiatives, Comrade Adewale Adeogun.

Speaking at the press conference, Ogoh said the outcome of last Saturday’s elections largely reflects the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians, who voted for candidates of their choice without hindrance.

“We wish to congratulate the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) for organising a free, fair, credible, and gender-sensitive election, and indeed all Nigerians for peacefully conducting themselves, which proved once again that the principle of ‘one man, one vote’ is now the norms in Africa’s biggest democracy,” she said.

She also commended the security agencies for conducting themselves professionally and with the utmost civility, thereby ensuring that elections took place and met international best practices.

Gbajabiamila urged those planning to plunge Lagos State into a political and security crisis to desist from it immediately before the law catches up with them, adding that political thuggery and cultism remain prohibited.

“Elections are not a do-or-die affair, politicians should always approach it with a high level of civility and patriotism. They should see themselves as part of the society they want to lead and must not destroy it with their ambition to lead or rule by all means,” she advised.

Comrade Adeogun, who described the outcome of Saturday’s election as a victory for democracy, commended Nigerians and Lagos residents in particular for performing their civic responsibilities during the last elections without fear, favour, intimidation, or any form of harassment.

He said: “We appreciate the Independent National Electoral Commission in Lagos State for remaining resolute and committed to conducting a credible, transparent, free, and fair Governorship and state Assembly elections in the State whose outcome has truly reflected the people’s mandate by being neutral and fair to all participating political parties.

“The Lagos State Governorship and State Assembly elections of March 18, 2023, took place as scheduled across the entire state under a peaceful atmosphere. We, therefore, adjudged the election to have met the international best practices of credible, transparent, free, fair, and gender-friendly elections.”

Oladunjoye Congratulates Governor Sanwo-Olu, Hails Ogunkelu, and Tobun’s Re-Election ~Ajasa-Info

The Lagos East Vice-Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Barrister Olayinka Oladunjoye, has congratulated His Excellency, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat for their electoral exploits at the just concluded Gubernatorial election in Lagos.

The much-anticipated election, which was held on Saturday, March 18th, 2023, saw major political parties vying for control of Lagos, one of the most cosmopolitan states in Nigeria.

In a stunning turn of events from the results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, at exactly 1:15 am today, while the ruling party, APC, polled 762,134 votes; Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party, LP, polled 312,329 votes and AbdulAzeez Adeniran of the People Democratic Party (PDP) coming a distant 3rd with 62,449 votes.

Speaking to reporters earlier today, Oladunjoye expressed gratitude to the people of Lagos for putting their trust in Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the All Progressives Congress, APC, and pledged to work tirelessly to deliver on his promises to take the state to more enviable heights.

“All of us at Lagos East heartily congratulate our amiable Governor for his victorious emergence at the polls. We are humbled by the overwhelming support we have received from the people of Lagos, and we will not take the mandate accorded to him for granted”

“We understand the challenges that lie ahead, but we are confident that with hard work, dedication, and the support of the people, we can build a better Lagos for all with Mr. Sellable and his supportive Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat at the helm of affairs.”

“The Lagos of our dream, I can assure everyone has been rejuvenated with the re-election of Governor Sanwo-Olu in Lagos and our revered leader and President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu at the center. This will no doubt herald a new era of prosperous socioeconomic and political synergy between the two governments for the Greater Lagos Rising mantra and the THEMES agenda,” she said.

She stressed that the party’s message of continuity and progress appears to have struck a chord with voters, particularly in the urban centers where it enjoys unwavering support.

Speaking further, while emphasizing the ultimate significance of lawmakers in a democratic dispensation, Oladunjoye also congratulated the Lagos State House of Assembly members representing Epe Constituency I & II; Hon. Abiodun Tobun and Hon. Sylvester Ogunkelu alongside their Lagos East Senatorial District House of Assembly counterparts.

She added that with a strong mandate and a clear vision for the future, she is optimistic that the ruling party and its lawmakers will dutifully play their roles in building on the phenomenal successes recorded over the years to shape the future of Lagos, and Nigeria as a whole.

“The victory in Lagos State is not only significant for the governor-elect, but also for lawmakers in the state who have been elected to represent their constituencies. With the ruling party winning such a resounding victory, I am optimistic that many of these lawmakers who are from the same party would have the opportunity to reinforce the people’s mandate to push through their people-centered agenda in the state legislature”

“This is particularly important in a state like Lagos, which is not only the economic hub of Nigeria but also one of the most populous and diverse states in the country. The state legislature plays a crucial role in shaping policy and legislation that affects the lives of millions of people living in Lagos”

“The victory for lawmakers from the ruling party spells a positive impact on governance in the state. With a majority in the legislature, the party will be able to implement its policies and programs more easily, without the need for protracted negotiations and horse-trading with the opposition. I, therefore congratulate our House of Assembly members in Lagos East,” she said.

Reacting to the voting process across the state, the former Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, and Cooperatives expressed satisfaction about the electoral process in the state, commending the people for peaceful conduct.

She, however, frowned at acts of disruption and other electoral malpractices, adding that the people must be mindful of campaigning and voting along ethnic and religious lines.

This, she said, is a dangerous trend that has the potential to undermine the unity and stability of the state, and the country as a whole.

“When politicians and parties appeal to voters based on their ethnicity or religion, they are not only creating divisions within society but also playing with fire. This kind of identity politics can fuel resentment and mistrust among different groups, and even lead to violence”

“It is essential that politicians and parties in Lagos, and indeed across Nigeria, focus on issues that unite rather than divide people. This means appealing to voters based on their shared interests and values, and not their ethnicity or religion”

“Ultimately, the success of any democracy depends on the ability of people from different backgrounds to come together and work towards a common goal. By campaigning and voting along ethnic and religious lines, we risk tearing apart the very fabric of our society,” she said.
