. . . Issues Stop-Work Order at 10 Dredging Sites in Awoyaya, Environs
The Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has embarked on a monitoring exercise to Awoyaya area of the State and its environs, where “stop-work” orders were issued to 10 illegal dredging sites.
Speaking on the incident, the Director of Mineral Resources and Solid Minerals, Geologist Emilio Cardoso said the visit resulted from several petitions notifying the Ministry about illegal dredging activities causing environmental nuisance and degradation in the area.
Cardoso, who led the enforcement team, maintained that the government will ensure that dredging activities are conducted lawfully so that roads, public infrastructure and the wetlands are preserved.
Advising interested persons to obtain necessary dredging permits from the Federal Government, through the National Inland Water Authority, Cardoso emphasised the need to comply with stipulated laws without constituting any threat to the environment.
He said: “We are collating all necessary data as I speak, to first of all know the number of dredging companies we have; after that, we can now separate the illegal ones from the legal companies. In fact, some of these operators we are talking of, don’t even have licences from the Federal Government.”
The Director noted that operations of dredging companies have affected their host communities, making it difficult for residents to commute within their environment easily.
“Landlords are complaining that tenants are beginning to leave their flats for other places because of the situation of the environment”, he said.
Clarifying that the issuance of permits and licensing falls within the purview of the Federal Government, Mr. Cardoso stated, however, that activities of the dredging companies must not bring discomfort to the citizenry or affect government property.
“We have not come here to harass anyone. For now, we have realised the need to convene a stakeholders’ meeting where we will further engage the operators on the appropriate way to carry out their businesses. But for now, all dredging activities will stop until the needful is done”, Cardoso asserted.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism Arts and Culture, Pharm (Mrs) Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, has extended condolences to the entire entertainment family, especially the immediate relatives of the late musical icon, Victor Uwaifo whose death was announced in the early hours of Sunday following his demise on Saturday 28th of August, 2021.
The Commissioner said that the late guitarist who died at a ripe age of 80 years, was full of life till his demise.
Recalling the last live performance by the Edo-born musicologist, during a 12-hour non-stop entertainment evening hosted by Lagos State Government to celebrate Nigeria’s 60th Independence anniversary last year, Akinbile-Yussuf described Victor Uwaifo as an entertainer who understood the art and act of music.
She said: “Papa Uwaifo knows how to combine music with entertainment to thrill his audience. His performance during the 60th Independence Anniversary of Nigeria at Lagos Theatre in Oregun was such that would forever be remembered by everyone present at that event. Seeing a man of almost 80 years performed the way he did at the event last year September, shows that the deceased enjoys the grace of good health even in his old age.
“He did not only play good music but also teaches music, he understands what good music is and that is why some of his hit albums remain evergreen and he would forever be remembered for contributing his quota to the music industry”, she added.
A First Class graduate of Visual Arts from UNIBEN, the late Victor Uwaifo who played the guitar with dexterity and kinetic dancing steps, was once the Commissioner for Arts and Culture under Governor Lucky Igbinedion in Edo State. His tracks ‘Joromi’ and ‘Mammy Water’ were hits till his demise.

Lagos State Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Rabiu Olowo, who stated this in a keynote address at the grand finale of the Lagos State Civil Service Insurance Week with the theme, “If You Can Be Insured: We’ll Bear Your Risk”, explained that the State’s insurance policy helped Lagos with the challenges of replacement, reinstatement and repairs of damaged government property in the aftermath of the protest.
“Also, the COVID-19 pandemic that is still ravaging the entire world is another challenge that was catered for by the insurance industry. The consortium of underwriters provided a ‘special package’ for medical personnel involved in the treatment of COVID patients. This was done in the form of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)”, he said.

He said, “In addition to raising public awareness about insurance, I am glad to inform this gathering that to make the process of accessing insurance claims by government employees less cumbersome, the Lagos State Ministry of Finance, through its Insurance Department, has concluded zoning the activities of the Department, thereby decentralising its operations.
“The planned decentralisation will take into cognisance the five ‘IBILE’ divisions of the State, where zonal officers will report activities and claims to the headquarters for promptness, efficiency and effectiveness. With the initiative, distance will no longer be a limiting factor to access insurance claims by government employees”, the Commissioner noted.
Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Oyeyemi Ayoola, unveiled the digitalised insurance platform for Lagos civil servants.
“The Ministry saw gaps in the system and wants to digitalise its insurance processes and remove every form of delay in processing civil servants’ benefits in the State.
